Pivots are the most versatile footwork skill in boxing. The piot can be a workhorse footwork skill, helping you dominate the centre of the ring. Pivots can be used in a more elegant way to open angles or deflect attacks. This boxing training video gives you 3 boxing footwork drills that will 100% improve your pivots.
As with all boxing drills, the key is to be steady and deliberate. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. If you work boxing drills slowly, deliberately and with precision, over time you cannot fail to improve. In the fight situation, with this kind of approach it is m,ore likely that the training will take over and you will fight more instinctively.
The Simplest Pivot
Drill 1 (see 0:24 in the video) lays out the basic pivot.
When you pivot left or right, drive everything from the feet. The front foot must spin on the ball. Be aware of the tendency to tilt your body weight forward, over the front leg – avoid doing that.
This version of the pivot can be used to occupy the centre of the ring, making small adjustments to keep your opponent in your strike zone. You can also use this kind of pivot when you are backed against the ropes, spinning out of trouble as the opponent trys to nail you.
The Step and Pivot
The 2nd drill (see 2:20 in the video) is where take a step to the lead foot side with the lead foot and then pivot to the lead foot side.
The step across enables you to open up a wider angle and then the pivot puts you in the perfect spot to unload with your punches as your opponent is in your strike zone.
In the video I use a jab with the lead foot step across. Try swapping out the jab for a backhand and you’ll find that you get a nice boost in the power of the punch.
The Double Pivot
The final drill (see 4:12 in the video) involves putting a rear foot pivot and a front foot pivot into a daisy chain.
This approach gives you the same angle as with the step across drill (the previous drill), except on the opposite side. using the rear foot pivot means that you maintain the integrity of your boxing stance.
You can make yourself more difficult to hit by adding a duck to the 1st or 2nd pivot, or even both.
I would love to get your thoughts, use the comments section below.
