How to Throw a Straight Right & Left Hook Combo (Beginner Boxing)

If you are going to learn to throw a great combo, it pays to learn it in 3 ways – static, on the advance and on the retreat. This video breaks down the straight right and left hook into it’s component parts and then joins them up in perfect harmony with great footwork. You also get a cool way of defending any shots coming back!

The Combo Building Blocks

Any boxing combination is only as good as it’s component parts.

For the right hand left hook, setting things up with the ideal straight back hand is crucial.

Make sure you drive the power from the rear foot, triggering the hip rotation to maximise length and power.

Then there’s the left hook.

Again, make sure that you drive the power from the front foot.

Use palm in or palm down, it doesn’t matter.

What matters is that the punch lands!

Static Combo Time

Complete a one minute drill where you just throw the straight right and left hook.

Focus on the power drive from the feet and the hip rotation.

The great thing about the right hand is that it loads your lead hip up ready to deliver that fight-ending hook.

Make sure that your balance is good and that you don’t over-commit.

Time to Advance

When I say advance, I mean by a small amount.

Don’t try to cover too much ground, it’s the sign of inexperience.

Move in small increments.

When you let the right hand go, the left foot moves forward 6 inches.

Foot lands when the punch lands

When you let the left hook go, your rear foot comes forward 6 inches.

Again, the foot lands when the punch lands.

You have taken ground, delivered your payload and now have a boxing stance in good order.

Let Them Come

When you have that aggressive opponent closing down on you, let them come.

Don’t give the ground up for free though, exact a price.

Letting that right hand and left hook go, whilst giving ground, is a real heartbreaker.

When you unleash the right hand, let the rear foot retreat by 6 inches.

As with taking ground, we give ground in small increments.

As your left hook goes bring that front foot back 6 inches.

When your punch lands your foot lands.

So you give ground and deliver a power combo at the same time, that’s a great way of making aggressive opponents think twice.

Let Them Miss

Landing a great combo is only half the story.

There’s no point landing great shots if you are taking shots on the cheap.

So, after you’ve landed that left hook, move your head.

I think the inside roll is a wonderful follow up to a left hook.

Try the outside roll as well.

Try anything as long as that head moves.

Let Me Know

Is there anything you would do different here?

Can you see this working with any combination of punches?

    Fran, looking pretty powerful.
    Nice combo for self defense.
    Would you agree?

Yes I reckon so Mike. Keeping a good distance and that first right hand landing would certainly hold shock value to an aggressive assailant.
