3 Boxing Defense Drills – Super-Simple and Super-Effective

Punching is the easy bit of boxing.

Seriously, throwing punches is just a part of the jigsaw.

There are other skills that you need execute to come out on top.

This video gives you 3 super-simple boxing defense drills that will make you an incredibly effective defensive fighter. And effective defensive fighters can’t help but be effective offensive fighters.

There’s a story that I tell in the video that clearly demonstrates the power of these techniques, and how quickly you can apply them and see the positive outcomes.

The Boxing Defense Drills

These drills are pretty simple, it’s stuff you can implement right now.

Boxing Defense Drill 1

This is the easiest of all of the boxing drills.

Do a round of shadow boxing where all you use is one of 4 skills:

No punches, just head movement.

Put the head movement together in various sequences, doubling them up, stringing them together.

Add in some foot movement, nice and simple, just moving in and out.

This drill will help you focus on simply incorporating that vital head movement.

Head movement is a proactive skill, you don’t wait to see a punch come and then move your head, you move your head in the expectation that a punch will come.

Remember, when you make an opponent miss, that’s when your own opportunities to hit will arise.

Boxing Defense Drill 2

The second boxing drill is where we incorporate some punching.

The key is thought that we trigger the opponent to throw a punch first.

The sequence is trigger, defend, attack, defend – TDAD.

The trigger can be a feint or a punch, for example a jab.

That trigger generates the response from the opponent.

The key is that you move your head immediately after your trigger – do the slip, duck or lay back.

The response from your opponent misses and you let your shot go.

But it doesn’t end there.

Finish the drill off with another defense, again a slip, duck or lay back.

So that boxing drill is TDAD – trigger, defend, attack, defend.

Boxing Defense Drill 3

The final boxing drill again is quite a simple concept.

Head move, punch, head move.

This is about taking the opponent apart piece by piece.

The first head movement is a defense but also acts as a trigger, so you are applying pressure.

Let your punch go and then finish off with a head movement.

Hit first, hit last.

The key with all of these drills is that you do them at the correct range.

There’s no use triggering an opponent from the other side of the ring.

So, be on the edge of range or at long range. Be precise about your positioning.

I would love to get your comments on this, let me know below.
