Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor – My Thoughts

This is a short video, short because I have not much to say really.

Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor

Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor is one of the most talked about sporting events of 2017.

Both guys are at the top of their respective sports.

Mayweather Jr done it all in the sport of boxing whilst Conor McGregor has done much to bring MMA front and centre in the sporting world.

Both guys are loudmouthed, both are outspoken and both seem to relish the limelight.

Why has the fight been made? After lots of mud-slinging both ways, ultimately money talks!

The question for me is does Conor McGregor have a realistic chance of upsetting the odds and beating Floyd Mayweather Jr?

A little boxing background on Conor McGregor.

He boxed as a novice amateur in Ireland before switching to MMA.

This means that he was well schooled, be under no illusion of that.

The boxing clubs in Ireland are as good as you’ll find anywhere.

The amateur boxing development system is outstanding and the quality of coaching is impeccable.

The key thing for me though is that for the last 10 or 12 years, Conor McGregor has been training to fight in the MMA octagon.

For best part of 30 years Mayweather has done the same but specifically for the boxing ring, beginning as a phenomenon in the US Boxing system and following that up in the pro ranks.

Add to this the fact that Mayweather has fought some of the best fighters of his generation – that’s a serious amount of experience and skill.

Conor McGregor is expecting himself to re-engineer his whole fighting style in 10 weeks to face one of the finest technicians the ring has ever seen.

Some things that I expect:

  • I expect Mayweather to be cruel, to look to hurt and humiliate McGregor for as long as the bout lasts.
  • Mayweather may be 40, but he’s always looked after himself so to me he has the athletic capability of a man 5 to 10 years younger.
  • When a person is taking a beating, they revert to form – they revert to what they know best. I wonder whether a disqualification against McGregor is a real possibility. Less likely (but still a possibility) is an injury with McGregor using some tactics inside to damage Mayweather?
  • The most likely outcome though is that McGregor simply ‘shuts down’, devoid of ideas and ships too much punishment for any referee to stand by and accept.
  • On a final note, and this might be controversial, but I think that any of the top 10 welters in the World would beat McGregor in the boxing ring.

As always, interested in your thoughts.

Cheers

Fran

Hey Fran I would like to say I pay attention to lots of trainers and boxing websites, I was moved in the beginning by ur slow moving and sometimes boring teachings. But I have become a very big fan of your lessons and your knowledge of the sport. I watch not to learn how to box but to learn how to teach I have spent ly life fighting in rings, streets and many others. I have never been impressed enough to spend money on a site but that ha changed and u have left me intruqed for more. Thank for ur knowledge and no hard feelings I hope in concerns of me be judgementle. It and corrected.

      Hey Rodney

Thank you very much for your feedback, I’m happy that you stuck with it and got beyond my sometimes monotone delivery – I need to be a bit more exciting in my delivery at times I think 🙂

      Thanks again

I’ve never cared much for Mayweather, primarily because I believe his hunger for fame and riches far outweighs his love of the sport. And, I find his style boring. I much prefer the styles of Cotto, Pac Man, or Mikey Garcia, who demonstrate a more offensive approach while being more than capable counter punchers.

With that being said, I would love to see Mc Gregor put a hurting on Mayweather. But, I don’t see it happening. He’ll chase, he’ll be met with combos by Mayweather, chase some more, be peppered again. I foresee McGregor reverting to wild swings in an attempt to make any contact with Mayweather. I however, do not see the pride of the Irish fighting world being knocked out.

Once again, I’ll likely give in to temptation and waste my money by ordering it as I did with Pac Man vs Mayweather.

    • Fran August 20, 2017, 5:32 pm

Temptation is a terrible thing Don! Mayweather will not underestimate the threat, he never does. He’ll be cautious but will look to land lots of shots – and he does hit hard. I see an accumulation of shots doing it, like you though I don’t see a clean KO.

Mayweather is 40 hasn’t fought for 2 years so will naturally have slowed down, whereas McGregor is only 29 still competing and the top in his sport. Be under no illusion McGregor will cause damage, and not by cheating. He only moved to MMA as his coach couldn’t get anyone in Ireland to box him anymore, and being from a poor background couldn’t travel for his much needed bouts. Mayweather will be like Creed in Rocky iv (but hopefully not he same outcome)

    • Don August 19, 2017, 11:43 pm

I hope you’re right about McGregor doing some damage.

    • Fran August 20, 2017, 5:31 pm

We’ll see mate. McGregor is deffo a top athlete that’s for sure. His spar against Van Heerded a while ago was an eye opener, he better bring more to the ring than that.

  • Philippe August 18, 2017, 8:58 pm

Hi Fran, I fully agree with you, McGregor does not have any chance leaving this ring as a winner, although he will leave it as a rich man and I admire him for what he has accomplished in his life.
By the way, thank you for your great videos and articles, I really appreciate your work.

    • Fran August 20, 2017, 5:30 pm

      Thanks Philippe

Yes, top marks to Conor for his business acumen – he’s single-handedly brought this about.

  • Jeremy August 18, 2017, 12:57 am

I think Mayweather will do an Aturo Gatti on McGregor….punish and humiliate

    • Fran August 18, 2017, 6:44 pm

      Think you are right Jeremy.

There is an interesting article from ESPN or sone other reputable news source that I read about 2 years sgo. It basically said that fighters who went against Pac-Man were never the same again EVEN if they won. I think there’s a real possibility that Money may do the same to MacG, but only time will tell. Money takes it in 2 by KO. If ypu eant to watch a great matchup I never tire of the war between Haggler Hearns. Truly the best couple rounds of boxing EVER. Save your money and watch it on YouTube gratis instead of this farce.

    • Fran August 18, 2017, 6:43 pm

Great comment Sean. The Pac fight was tough for him that’s for sure, he looked in control in the next fight though.

Agree on Hagler Hearns – one of the best ever and I still watch it regularly myself – can play each punch in my mind 🙂

Greetings Coach….First off — Congratulations on your awesome 4 million YouTube views — FANTASTIC!!!

Second, I love your thoughts on the upcoming Mayweather/McGregor fight andt hope the Notorious One doesn’t resort to any underhanded tactics….Personally, I’ll be impressed if he lasts more than 5 rounds, but considering how he tuned up Paulie Malignaggi — he just_may_impress me.

    Cheers

    • Fran August 18, 2017, 6:41 pm

Thanks Paul, nice to hear from you and I hope all is well.

One thing is for sure, McG is going to walk away a lot more wealthy then he started!

      • P. SMITH August 24, 2017, 6:37 pm

I’m not too bad, thank you Fran….I hope all is well in your life…You ‘know it’ regarding Conor walking away very wealthy after this bout…IMHO, he has already won because he has nothing to lose and so much to gain….It’s like when Muhammad Ali was goading and hunting Sonny Liston for a title shot…Will McGregor ‘shake up the world’ too? Hmmm

        • Fran August 27, 2017, 5:48 pm

          Hey mate

I almost mentioned Ali in my preview video (more in respect of how he could be cruel in the ring like I expected Mayweather to be, for example in the Terrell fight), but in the end I didn’t.

Watched the bout this morning, every bit as disappointing as I expected. I was especially shocked by the US commentary – really odd, trying to make the viewer believe that they were watching history in the making – I guess that they are 1st and foremost part of the promotion machine.

Glad it’s over, onto Alvarez vs Golovkin…now that’s a fight!!!

  • Anonymous August 17, 2017, 8:51 pm

Congratulations on your up coming celebration, thankyou for the price less information you share.

  • Dave Waterman August 17, 2017, 8:30 pm

I won’t be watching this debacle, Fran. Mayweather is a great athlete, the best boxer of his generation possibly. But he’s treated the sport as a cash cow and disregarded its longevity in favour of personal riches beyond which he can spend. This ridiculous match up is the crowning glory of his cynicism.

If I had to pose a likely outcome: Mayweather will carry McGregor to give the punters something for their money. I expect him to play with McGregor, increasingly making obvious the gulf in skill, then terminate the contest whenever he chooses- 5th or 6th round.

    • Fran August 18, 2017, 6:39 pm

Strange how a couple of boxing coaches think alike on this one innit mate! Purposely didn’t head into the moral discussion around FM mate, very choppy waters 🙂

  • Jimmy August 17, 2017, 8:19 pm

    Hi Fran
Sorry mate I can’t disagree with you hundred percent bang on The nail
From Jimmy settle for Boxing Club

    • Fran August 18, 2017, 6:35 pm

Thanks Jim = just don’t see any other outcome.
