Killer Body Punching – Tap & Whack

I have seen the toughest of boxers, boxers who possess incredible punch resistance, double up and writhe in agony from a well-placed body punch.

The liver, the spleen – both are prime targets for fight-ending shots.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that good body punching is simply about pounding away aimlessly at the midriff of your opponent.

If you can create your openings dynamically and on-demand then your chances of landing that fight-ending shot are massively increased.

This video gives you the key points of my ‘Tap and Whack’ approach to creating that golden opening.

Tap and Whack

The key points:

Vary the power and trajectory of your punches, using decoy ‘taps’ to create openings – either the flanks or the centre line.

Be precise and powerful when delivering your killer shot.

Comments and questions as always are most welcome.

Cheers

Fran

Chisel-hammer/tap-to-snap … lighter rhythms in a (distracting) flurry, a roll or slip or some kind of small feint move, and then a hard shot … Love this.

    Coach fran
Do you think is possible to combine body shot with slips and rolls to avoid a right hand coming down to my head, because I kinda feel vulverable after I trhow a body shot speacially a hook, How do you deal with this situation coach?

    • Fran July 11, 2019, 6:30 pm

Yes. Roll, double cover, switch position

      • Armando marin July 12, 2019, 12:19 am

Thx for your reply coach I feel very comfortable using double cover, but I have a question while you’re throwing the hook to body I already have bended the knees I need to bend the knees a little more or I just rotate hips after a right or left hook to body and also how can I switch position I´ve never heard about it could you tell how to do it, please? Thx again coach You have great techniques
I still have a long way to go haha

    Hi Fran,
Great stuff, good demo and explanation. Power body shots are often overlooked by boxers in combat and judges in scoring but they are a high grade weapon, the first and last resort of the smart brawler.
Most likely a body shot will be used to set up head shots and stylish boxers (Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd, Whitaker, Larry Holmes,) would rarely commit to a body blow. There is a reason for that – most hand injuries occur due to body shots. It’s not even the elbow so often, it’s just that the body is a heavy and tough “shock absorbing” structure meant for protection of vital organs. A body shot is very likely to meet bone and even if it lands on the navel, there is recoil. You still hit a wall, it won’t bounce or turn away like the head. A shock wave goes back through the arm and basically a body shots takes more energy and leaves you wide open.

On the other hand, if you hit the center mass cleanly with a power punch, you get a huge break and basically the rest of the round is yours. If you are able to land consistently to the body, the fight won’t go the distance. A clean liver/solar plexus hit will end the show and leave a lifetime memory for the recipient.

      Very well put Ivan.

Never really thought about the propensity for hand injuries in relation to delivering boxy shots – but you make a very good point, especially in terms of ribs.

Risk reward though – get it right and it’s a fight-ender, amateur or pro code.

Thanks for the input, smart and well presented as usual.
