Precise Body Punching Gets Results!

Great body punching in boxing is not that difficult to master.  For me, one of the key characteristics that all renowned body punchers possess is precision in the delivery of the punch.  In this 90 Second Boxing Tips video I am going to explain how to maximise your chances of landing the perfect body punch.

Being an excellent body puncher is something that you should aspire to because a well-executed body punch can end a fight within a split second, or can at least incapacitate an opponent for an extended period…always nice 🙂

Here is the video and then below is a further breakdown of great body punching in boxing.

Body punching precision

The Steps to Being a Great Body Puncher

Great body punching is not about smashing away wildly at the area below the neck and above the waist.  Great body punching is also not about pounding away at the ribs of the opponent.  The ribcage is a massively tough structure, a structure that is rarely damaged in a boxing ring because of the protection provided by the gloves.

It is vital that when throwing your body punches you focus on very specific areas of the body; this will regularly result in the kind of effect you want to see.

So, how do you pick those perfect positions to aim those carefully crafted body punches:

  1. Find the base of your sternum (the scientific name being the xiphoid process).
  2. The width of 3 fingers below that point is the solar plexus.  The solar plexus is a complex of nerves that are very vulnerable to impact.
  3. If your punch lands any lower than the solar plexus then the abdominal muscles are likely to absorb the impact of the shot.
  4. From the solar plexus, take the shape of an inverted ‘V’ down each side of the body, just below the lowermost rib.
  5. This area is where you will find the liver, the spleen and a root up inside the tough ribcage to all of the other goodies 🙂

Angle the Body Punches

So you have found the perfect location, the next task is to deliver the great body shot.  A key tip is to deliver the punch at an angle to ensure that the ‘shockwave’ of the body punch travels through as much of the mass of the body as possible.

The left hook body punch, the right hook body punch, the left uppercut body punch and the right uppercut body punch all drive home this ‘angle’ principle.

Some really simple principles that should deliver immediate improvements in your body punching.
