Two Boxing Defences to Use Against Three Types of Opponent

In this video we work through 2 types of boxing defence to deal with 3 types of opponent. One of these boxing defences is a body movement, and one is a boxing footwork skill.

The two boxing skills that we use are the Lay Back and the Push Out (sometimes called the pendulum step).

The Lay Back and the Push Out!

The lay back is a boxing sill that involves being at long range and bending the back leg to take to take your head out of range. After execution you return to the start point and let your punches go.

It’s important to keep the guard high. It’s important to try to avoid bending at the waist – we want to remain fighter effective throughout the skill. Here’s a proactive strike drill that demonstrates the skill, a skill that was used extensively by Floyd Mayweather Jr:

The second boxing skill is the push out or pendulum step. This is a boxing footwork skill that involves using sharp movement to push out of (long) range to the edge of range to then push back to long range to deliver your punches.

The push out is a ‘balls of your feet’ drill, you’ll never get it right with flat feet. Also, ensure that the line from the toe of your front foot to the heel of your back foot remains throughout the execution phase.

Oleksandr Usyk is a great exponent of the push out, you can find a breakdown of his style here:

The lay back works well against defensive counter punchers, it’s an assertive skill that enables you to keep pressure on the opponent.

The push out works well against static boxers or boxers that rely on a more square stance and power punching.

So there we have it, two cool boxing defences to use against different types of opponent.

Cheers
