Uppercuts, Hooks and Mix Ups

In my opinion, the uppercut is the most challenging punch to execute in boxing.

I also think that there are many who are not precise enough in their execution of the uppercut and it actually should be defined as a hook when it lands.

Boxing Training – Getting the Uppercut Right!

In order to be an uppercut, the punch must:

  1. Split the guard of the opponent
  2. Hit the centre line from a frontal attack.

If your ‘uppercut’ lands, and your forearm is not vertical, then it will meet neither of the criteria defined above.

To me, it will actually be a hook.

Still a great punch, but just not an uppercut.

It is important to have high expectations when it comes to defining your boxing skills.

Be precise. Get it right.

Excellent clarification and demonstration. There seems to be a lot of confusion around hooks and upper-cuts and it is a pet-peeve of mine.

I’m re-discovering kickboxing in my middle age, and your content is clearing out a lot of my cob-webs. Especially helpful since I don’t have a coach this time around providing cues.

Thanks Pal, always nice to be able to help, especially when it’s cross-discipline…glad that you’ve found a wee bit of inspiration here👍

    Hey Fran.

Great to see you back in the gym, mate. Just a quick word to say how I respect your shouting out Jimmy’s channel. It’s a lovely thing to see the respect you show for another coach and YouTuber, – not seeing him as competition, but rather as a peer, and honouring the work he does with kids in his community. I’ll go check out his channel. I could do with shedding a few lockdown kilos!

    Take care.

      Hello Karl

Thanks mate, nice comment that. I just think that great content deserves to be noticed, and Jim really has a great boxing brain and a real understanding of the conditioning required. Good luck with dropping those kilos pal…one session at a time, that’s all👍
