Boxing Training and Self-Defense – My Story

In this video I talk through one of the most frightening self-defense situations I’ve faced. This night involved a short car chase, two assailants and a late night dark road.

This was a full-on self-defense situation, one of those really intense and frightening experiences that lives with you from that day on.

Boxing Training and Self-Defense

The question is, did my history of boxing training help me? Was I able to leverage the skills that I’d learned during my years of boxing training to help me get through the situation?

Well, the answer of whether my boxing training assisted with self-defense is ‘yes’, but probably not in ways that you might think.

Cheers

Fran

You handled yourself pretty well in that situation Fran. I think that, when it comes to defending yourself, mindset is the most important thing. To be absolutely determined not to let this happen to you and to fight back. Being able to think clearly in such a situation is a great bonus! Not everybody can do that. There are highly trained martial artists who loose streetfights and there are people with absolutely no martial background or training who win, only because of this mindset. But, of course, if you have to fight in a very stressful situation it’s also important that you have the right techniques “programmed on your hard disk”so they can come out under stress. Quite a story Fran, glad you came out ok!

Yes, agreed Jack. There is a huge amount of luck involved in any street altercation, so many uncontrolled variables. You’re right though, having some skills to fall back on, having them programmed in is a big help. Being used to someone trying to hurt you helps too, I think that shocks people who aren’t used to it.

Balls and eyes… both recommended targets when dealing with close range rioters in Ulster. ‘Nobody ever won a fight without their bollocks or eyes.’

😂 Would have loved being in those classes Dave to hear some rough-arse sargeant giving out the advice. The same can’t be said of being out on those streets though mate, that must have been on another level😐
