Punch Combinations – Don’t Be Greedy!

We all want to be able to throw blazing punch combinations, machine-gun style, delivered with power, speed and precision.  The key point for me about good, effective punch combinations is that you are not greedy when building them.

You should not look to build 8 punch combinations, you should seek to build 4 x 2 punch combinations.  These punch combinations should be connected with any of a range of other boxing skills.

So, don’t think of them as punch combinations, think of them as boxing skills combinations.  Consider the connecting skills between the punches as being part of the punch combination.

It might be 2 punches – duck – 2 punches – side step – 2 punches.  This is 3 distinct punch combinations dealing with the risk of shots coming back by incorporating defence skills.

It’s also worth developing such combinations that use dynamic punching.  This means that your punches are not all the same speed and power – mix it up in order to create diversions so that there is a greater chance of your punch combinations being as effective as possible.

Cheers

Fran

Thanks, I’ll be practising that next Saturday. A local Fitness Centre started Boxing sessions this year. Just now the coaching is for juniors and adults who compete. But they’ve started an Adult “DIY Session” on Saturdays. And last Saturday the Coach told me you’re a really good Instructor.

Keeping your combinations brief, and thinking of combinations in terms of mixing techniques rather than adding punches. A very powerful lesson that many of us forget during our bagwork.

One of my all-time favorite videos of yours, Fran. Thanks.
