Spence vs Crawford Review – Why Didn’t Spence do this One Thing?

When Errol Spence climbed in the ring with Terence Crawford I expected a good fight. I felt that Crawford would win by a wide points margin, but I still expected it to be somewhat competitive.

When it came down to it, Spence vs Crawford was just not competitive on any level, well aside from the first round where they exchanged a lot of jabs. But, here’s the funny thing. Spence might have taken that bit of knowledge, that early standoff, and maybe used it to good effect. But, well, he didn’t.

After round 1 everything went south. Crawford is an absolute boxing master, but boy did Errol help him out. The bottom line came down to two things for me. Number 1, Spence did not use a single straight back hadn’t in the entire 9 rounds of fighting.

Spence not throwing a straight right hand is like a bricklayer not using a spirit level, or a soldier turning up to a gun-battle armed with a sword. It’s just weird.

The second thing is that Crawford’s range appreciation was absolutely nailed on. Spence on the other hand almost looked like he was purposely trying to place himself in the worst place in the entire boxing ring in any one moment, specifically in the Crawford kill zone.

If there’s a second run at Spence vs Crawford (and I hope there isn’t), maybe Errol should consider using a nice straight left hand every now and again. Who knows, maybe he’ll make it competitive.

Fabulous summation and analysis Fran. Really appreciate the insights and your pointing out the importance of the edge of range – because, it is !! As we’ve all found out by being just a wee bit to close to our sparring partners return fire.

Generous and top notch info as always Sir !!
